The Bénouville Bridge was possibly the location of the first fighting of D-Day, when British paratroopers landed to capture the bridge from the German defenders. Café Gondrée, situated nearby, was then shortly afterwards liberated. The bridge was renamed Pegasus Bridge after the emblem of the British Airborne.
